ROSIE

My muscles ached as I shifted Amr in my arms. My legs were screaming at me to stop, but I wouldn’t allow myself to rest, not until I knew was safe. Xena may be leaving me alone in the meantime, but that didn’t mean she would play by the rules.

She was narcissistic and psychotic. There was no rule book when it came to her and even if I had successfully used her own manipulation tactics against her, that didn’t mean anything when she still needed me.

I had not only been her worst project yet, but I had humiliated her, berated her, and given her no reason to trust me. But that would have to change because for the first time, she had given me the key to her own demise.

The walk to Rae’s house from the Winterfell campus was much longer than I remembered, or maybe I was just so exhausted and worn down from everything with Xena that the short walk felt like miles.

My heart was beating erratically, there was a sweat coating my body, and I was already out of breath. Amr had whined and whined for me to put him down, and probably had been pushing for me to rest, but I didn’t listen to him.

I needed to get to the others and let them know what had happened before she did.

When I found myself on the edge of Rae’s garden, I let out a deep sigh feeling all of the tension and panic leave me.

In front of me, trees were sprawled across the perimeter of the house; beyond them were rose bushes and other well-kept flowers that made the area smell wonderful. A welcome change from the dusty dungeon she had kept us in. It had no doubt been left over from when the school was first built and forgotten about for long enough that Xena took refuge there.

Though she would leave now that her hiding place was known, that much was obvious. After all, even with our deal intact she was still a woman on the run.

The magical barrier that surrounded the property was vibrating in the air and sat against my skin comfortably. It was warm, comforting magic that I had come to recognize over the years and was now associated with my feelings of home and security. It was the only thing separating me from the others, but my own erratic thoughts kept me from crossing it.

Once again, Marques had shaken me to my core.

For the first time, I was able to access his power and the bloodlust that it emitted had scared me enough that on the walk home I started to doubt if it was even safe to come back here.

I knew that I would never hurt those that I loved…but it scared me when I realized how little control I had over his powers or memories. Suddenly, I had been filled with memories and feelings of a person who was not me.

It was like the first time the curse had been lifted and I was able to access my full powers.
